Keep refrigerated containers cool

Temperature-sensitive cargo is transported in refrigerated containers or reefers.

These refrigerated containers need a source of electricity called gensets to function throughout their transportation be it on a vessel, at the terminal, or overland. When refrigeration is necessary during transportation one needs a genset.

Key features of genset

A genset or a generator set is a power supply source with two main components: a diesel-fueled engine and a generator. These power-generating devices do not need a power grid to produce electricity and thus are used as a portable or backup power source.

There are two types of gensets based on how they are attached to containers: A clip-on genset, which clips onto the top end of a container, and an underslung genset, which is fixed underneath the chassis on which the container is placed.

Reefers or refrigerated containers cannot cool on their own, and they need electricity to function. A genset is used when the cargo requires refrigeration between the inland loading point and the sea terminal. The exact prerequisites to successful transportation are subject to the sensitivity of the goods, the length of the journey or the ambient weather conditions. Based on these requirements and with the use of a genset, the reefers create a consistent temperature throughout the cargo’s journey.
